Zarafa Delivers BMU Replacement at John Lewis, Exeter
Zarafa Height Solutions is proud to announce the successful delivery and handover of a new Building Maintenance Unit (BMU) at John Lewis, Exeter — enhancing façade access capability and long-term serviceability at one of the city’s flagship retail sites.
Appointed on behalf of the John Lewis Partnership, Zarafa was responsible for the full turnkey replacement of the BMU system. The works included removal of the obsolete unit, structural strengthening of high-level steelwork, design and installation of a new SkyGondola SG18 slewing jib BMU, and final commissioning in accordance with BS 6037-2:2020.
The BMU was designed and manufactured in full compliance with BS EN 1808:2015, ensuring the highest standards of safety, reliability and structural integrity. Our in-house design team worked closely with consultant D2E to ensure the new system integrated seamlessly with the existing rooftop layout and structural constraints.
Structural enhancements were made to the high-level terrace beams to accommodate the new track and support stubs, supported by detailed calculations and as-built documentation.
Installation was delivered with minimal disruption to store operations and completed ahead of the summer season. Zarafa also provided all required certification, a full O&M handover pack, and an annual maintenance agreement to maintain LOLER compliance and asset longevity.
This project highlights Zarafa’s capability in delivering technically complex access solutions with precision and care. From early-stage design through to final testing and handover, we ensured a smooth and assured delivery — providing lasting value to the client.
